A small but most beautifully kept garden in Glastonbury deserves its own blog space. Nestled at the foot of the TOR, it is apparently one of the best known and most holy of wells in Britain. Previously known as the Blood or Red Spring because of the iron deposits in the water, it flows ceaselessly at a rate of about 112,000 litres a day. Legend surrounds it and it is believed to represent Christ's blood, the essence of life or the life force within each of us depending on where one comes from!
Surrounded by manicured gardens with beautiful flowering plants and creepers, places for meditation abound. Seats in little alcoves;
the well itself with its celtic wrought iron lid of two interlocking circles symbolising a union of heaven and earth or spirit and matter (a lance passes through the centre of the circles and it makes a very pleasing symmetrical symbol called Vesica Pisces)
and the contemplative garden itself are all so peaceful, tranquil and spiritual that one can't help but speak quietly, almost reverently, even when no-one else is around.
I found this little piece of Glastonbury to be one of the most memorable places I have seen on this trip........"a place of sanctity, healing and peace."
